"VAULTING THE SHARK"

This strip (and commentary below) was originally published on April 11, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

I don't know how long the idea of Leave it to Bieber had been bouncing around my head before I wrote this strip, but I can tell you that I will forever be grateful to Harold and Our Adventure Continues if only because I was allowed the opportunity to get this joke out there in front of all you.

Your welcome.

"JUMPING THE SHARK"

This strip (and commentary below) was originally published on April 9, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Harold and I are, by no means, fans of reality TV.

While I can certainly understand the lure of some of the shows out there, it's just really not for me.

However, I do have to be honest and let you all know that I did enjoy me some Hell's Kitchen, but my daughter won't let me watch it anymore because they all use such bad language.

Plus, I have to admit that I've never actually watched Jersey Shore or Honey Boo Boo, but from what little I've seen, I really feel like I'm not missing much.

I'm going to go on the record and say that in Season Four of Downton Abbey, they will jump the shark when they are invaded by aliens.

That is all.

I don't have a lot to say about this strip except to say that this particular strip was both written and drawn by Harold, and I find it incredibly funny.

"LIGHT IT UP BLUE"

This strip was originally published on April 2, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

I really debated how I was going to handle posting this strip today.

First, to clarify, my son is autistic, so this strip was very personal for me.

Second, we no longer Light It up Blue, but before I explain why, let's talk about what Light It Up Blue is:

Light It Up Blue is a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of autism and was launched in 2010 by Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is the world's largest autism science and advocacy organization. This initiative is intended to raise international awareness of autism as a growing public health crisis in support of World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Awareness Month in the United States. This text has been taken from www.cute-calendar.com

Sounds innocent enough, right?

Well, here's the the thing. Back then, in 2013, my wife and I were trying to learn whatever we could about autism, and the one organization that was out front and center was Autism Speaks, so we got behind them. Right?

Well, we've since learned that they are not to organization to back. I'm honestly not going to get into all of here it, but only because I really don't have the time to go back and do all the research I already did a few years back for myself, and find all the links to back up my research.

Just know that based on what I found a few years back, based on stories in which it was revealed that they spend more of their budget fundraising then they actually spend toward research or actually helping people with autism, I was out.

That being said, I'm still proud of this strip and I'm super proud of my son.

So there it is.

OUR ADVENTURE CONTINUES 020

"QUITTING TIME"

This strip was originally published on March 28, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Will we ever see Harold again?

Might he return when he is needed most?

Will he strike out on his own and start his own comic that will be dark, grim, gritty, and full of the sorts of things that makes the anti-hero so popular in today's modern comics?

Only time will tell.

By the way, don't you just love that last panel?

That was all Harold.

All I wrote for the last panel was the Harold character telling the Steeven character that he quit, but then Harold (the real Harold, not the one in the comic - this is all too confusing) came up with the idea of creating an homage to the great John Romita Spider-Man page from The Amazing Spider-Man #50 (April 11, 1967) where Peter Parker quits being Spider-Man.

"THE VIKING SKETCH: PART TWO"

This strip was originally published on March 26, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Harold totally wrote this strip.

That's just one of the many things that was great about our creative relationship. We each inspired each other. I wrote the The Viking Sketch Part One, sent it to him, and it inspired him to write The Viking Sketch Part Two.

There are a great big bunch of these strips that were inspired by something Harold has said. He'll email me and say something like: "We should do a strip about how much I hate yogurt," and one week later I've written 5 strips on the subject . . . but you'll have to wait a month or so for those.

"THE VIKING SKETCH: PART ONE"

This strip was originally published on March 21, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

I want to give you an idea of how long Harold and I had been working on this comic by the time this strip had gone up on March 21, 2013.

This strip, The Viking Sketch Part One, was written on June 7th, 2012.

I remember, after writing the script, I was really looking forward to sharing it with everyone. I only had to wait nine months.

And now here we are, nine years later, and I get to share it again.

Other than the last two panels on the previous strip, this would be the first time you see Harold and I in costume portraying other characters. Which I just absolutely love.

"GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on March 19, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Look, Ma! I'm a Viking!

Buckle your seat belts, dear readers, for today begins a story line that will change everything, everywhere, for all of eternity!

That's right folks, after this story-line ends, nothing will ever be the same again, for anything, at every point in time, and throughout every possible reality!

I want to say more, but I'm afraid that there just isn't enough hyperbole available in the universe to really do this thing justice!

So be prepared to hang on for dear life, ladies and gentlemen, as we continue next time with part one of: THE VIKING SKETCH!

"HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on March 14, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Looks like Warren is up to his tricks again.

This is one of my favorite strips.

The script basically said that Saint Patrick is fighting cyborg snakes. The only direction I supplied regarding the look of Saint Patrick was that I thought it would be funny if he was wearing a costume that looked just like the Punisher, but green and white instead of black and white.

When I got the line art to flat, I was blown away ... mainly because of the shamrock/skull on his chest. That's all Harold and I love it.

"FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on March 12, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

Meet Reg and Stan.

We obviously haven't gone into any back story with these guys yet, but I like to think that Reg, the guy with the mustache, won the lottery and used his earnings to open up a comic book store.

But here's the thing, Reg didn't really want to run a comic book store, he just wanted his own place to hang out and read comics. So, he hired his buddy, Stan, to run the place.

As far as how these two fellas look, and the design that went into them, Harold rocked it as usual. He asked me how I pictured these guys, and I simply told Harold that I pictured Reg and Stan to be the anti-Harold and and the anti-Steeven. Harold came back with the very designs you see in the strip now.

"JUSTIFICATION"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on March 7, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

You may recognize this strip, and that's because it was originally part of Variety Smack.

But here's the thing, Harold actually redrew it for Our Adventure Continues.

You can see the original HERE. It's kind of interesting to look at the original and then look at this one because you can see how Harold's art has evolved.

As far as the story behind the strip, well, here's the thing, just because someone is a writer, that doesn't necessarily mean that they know how to spell every single word in the English language without looking it up.

So, yes. I didn't know how to spell wildebeest. I'll admit it. I made a mistake.

Frankly, I'm not sure why Harold keeps me around.

But you know what? My mistake allowed us to do this here funny strip about how I didn't really make a mistake (even though I did). Plus, I love that panel where Harold and I bump fists. I swear that Harold can see inside my brain because that is exactly how I saw it all in my head.

I want to point out the Captain Might t-shirt that Harold is wearing in the strip. Captain Might comes from a short comic story Harold and I did which you can read HERE.

"HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on February 14, 2013 over at www.ouradventurecontinues.com

I'd love to take the credit for today's holiday-themed strip, but if I remember correctly, all I came up with was the bottom panel. That top panel was all Harold.

See, when we were doing Variety Smack, we did a Thanksgiving strip which them inspired us to do similar strips for other holidays, and if my memory serves me, which it rarely does, I think I just said to Harold:

"Come up with something crazy in that top panel and the bottom panel will be Warren telling his kids: AND THAT'S WHY WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY."

And so yeah, that top panel springs out of the mind of artist, Harold C. Jennett III.

"THE RESOURCING OF HUMAN BEINGS"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on May 14, 2012

I had planned on doing a number of strips like this in which the Steeven character has trouble understanding what the letters in initialisms stand for and so then spews forth many various possible options and never coming close to the correct words.

But here's the thing. I have never quite decided that the character's issue stems from a true lack of understand, or if he knows exactly what HR stands for and he just thinks he's funny.

You decide.

Until then, here are some other words HR might stand for:

Hamburger Radio
Hanoi Rocks
Halibut Rancher
Handkerchief Radish
Handle Representative
Help Rope
Human Raptor
Harbinger of Ricotta

"THE SPELLING MISTAKE"

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip is from 2012 but was never before published

This is an interesting strip, but only because when we rebooted the comic and started over as Our Adventure Continues we used this very strip. Except Harold redrew it for Our Adventure Continues because the wording changed. That will make more sense when we get to that strip later on down the line.

Anyway, this strip is based on actual events. When I originally wrote the strips in which Rabid Ninja Zombie Wildebeasts are involved, I spelled Wildebeest incorrectly. But, as the strip explains, I managed to justify the error.

"HOW MUCH!?"

This strip was originally published on November 22, 2011

Back when this strip was posted 10 years I ago, I'd written something up about the strip that, rather than try to rewrite today, I figured I'd just repost. So here you go, my words from 10 years in the past:

Have you ever been to a convention just so that you could meet and get a picture with one of your all time favorite celebrities? Then you pay the ten to twenty bucks they charge you just to get in the door, only to find that you have to throw down another fifty to a hundred just for the honor of getting that picture and one or two words from the aformentioned celebrity?

Well, I haven't.

I don't get out much, but that's just me.

But we here at Variety Smack can relate and Harold has put together today's strip to show how you, if you are brave enough, can get get that picture without spending all that green. So give it up to the hardest working artist in the biz!

VARIETY SMACK 009

"THE BEARD OF DOOM"

This strip was originally published on November 17, 2011

See, the way I figured it was that since Harold got to live out one of his fantasies through the comic (see the last strip), then doggone it, I was gonna too.

This is, again, another retail inspired strip. I was, as I stated before, working at a Walgreens at the time I wrote a lot of these, so my experiences there would sometimes trickle into the comic.

One thing that had always bothered me about working retail were the people that would come up to the counter and spend the entire time I'm ringing them up talking on their phone.

Well, I don't know about you, but I've always found that sort of behavior downright rude. And frankly, it tended to get me a mite angry.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fairly antisocial guy, I wasn't looking to hold meaningful conversations with these people, but my very human dignity did want a little acknowledgement that I existed, that I wasn't just a vending machine they were plunking money into.

Smart phones, social media at our fingertips, it's all slowly killing society. These innovations designed to connect people from around the world and allow us to interact socially with each other over great distances is also destroying the way we interact with each other face to face.

I don't know, maybe I'm just old and cranky.

Also, I just want to point out real quick that Harold put little Teddy Bear faces on my jammies and I love that.

VARIETY SMACK 008

"HAROLD VON DOOM"

This strip was originally published on November 15, 2011

This strip was all Harold.

The idea was his, it was written by him, he drew it up, he produced and directed it, he did it all on this one.

And from what I know about Harold, this is an actual dream of his.

The thing is, when I look back at our time making these comics and I'm being completely honest with myself, Harold worked way harder on these strips than I did.

I mean, sure, I had to come up with ideas and script them out, but when I was really feeling productive and creative I could write up a dozen strips in a day.

Harold, on the other hand, could do a strip a day if he had no distractions and other things going on in his life. He did the pencils, the inks, the letters, and the colors.

Harold Jennett was the hardest working man on Variety Smack . . . and he DOES NOT like yogurt!

VARIETY SMACK 007

"THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR"

This strip was originally published on November 11, 2011

Yes, it's another retail inspired strip.

I love this time of year. I love the fall, and I love the holiday season. This time of year really helps, for me, to cement the importance of family, and that's why, for me, it is the most wonderful time of the year.

However, this strip was written during my third holiday season working in retail, an institution that gives this time a year a whole new meaning.

That was a decade ago, but the experiences there, during that time, during the holiday season, have forever stained my soul.

Because working in retain as the holiday season dawns means dealing with customers while making sure the promo aisle is stocked and looks nice, even after hundreds of people rifle through the products, people who never put stuff back where it goes (seriously, how hard is that . . . ok, I'm guilty of it too, but still!), people who stampede through each and every day like a herd of wildebeest and never once, not once, say 'thank you' or 'excuse me' or 'nice shirt', yet always have a boatload of negative things to say like 'this is too expensive' or 'you never have what I want' or 'your shirt is ugly'!

And what's up with that!? I like my shirt! My wife bought me this shirt, and frankly I don't give much of a rat's furry behind what you think about my shirt!

I'm sorry, I seem to have gotten away from my original train of thought. Where was I?

Oh yeah:

I love this time of year, even though the retail industry, as a collective, does its best to try and dampen my spirits.

"WORKING FOR A LIVING"

This strip was originally published on November 8, 2011

This is another strip that I based on an actual experience of mine.

At the time Harold and I were doing Variety Smack, I was working at a Walgreens as a second job, and I'd be there, in my Walgreens shirt and nametag, stocking shelves, and most nights someone would come up to me and ask if I worked there.

I can admit that I never responded the way our man above did, but I always wanted to. I just never did, because frankly, I'm a bit of a coward.
